THE CURATOR EDIT

Sometimes you don’t need immigration.

You need better ideas.

For complete disappearance: Siwa.

For actual winter sun: El Gouna or the Red Sea.

For culture without feeling like you’re on a school trip: Luxor + Aswan by Nile.

For one night away: Fayoum.

For summer: Ras El Hekma. Obviously.

None of this means don’t travel abroad.

I will be the first people telling you to book the flight.

But Egypt has a strange habit of being more exotic to the people flying into it than the people already living here.

I’m fixing that.

THE CURATOR SAYS: Before opening Skyscanner, look at the map underneath you.

My five choices have completely different reasons to go: Karnak and the West Bank in Luxor; felucca time and Nubian culture in Aswan; the oasis and guided desert excursions in Siwa; Tunis Village pottery in Fayoum; and a Bayoud boat day followed by the Sailing Club in El Gouna. The right one depends on the season and the kind of escape you want.
